Experience a unique combination of cutting-edge research and industrial heritage!

The tour will begin with a visit to the University Centre for Energy Efficient Buildings of the Czech Technical University (CTU UCEEB) in Buštěhrad – a research centre focused on sustainable construction, building energy performance, indoor environmental quality, and smart technologies for buildings and cities. The guided tour will give you insight into what we are working on and the innovations we are developing in the field of sustainable building.

Afterwards, we will continue to nearby Kladno – a city with a rich industrial past that stood for decades as a symbol of Czech industrialization. Kladno became especially known for its black coal mining and steel production. A guided bus tour will take you through its industrial landmarks as well as recent sustainable urban development projects, some of which were carried out in cooperation with our research centre.

The highlight of the tour will be a visit to the Museum of High-Rise Buildings – a unique exhibition dedicated to post-war housing and life in Kladno’s iconic “high-rises.”

Tour B: Evolution of sustainable architecture in Prague

Discover 12 years of evolution in sustainable building design!

We will visit the ČSOB Campus in Prague-Radlice, which represents an entirely new approach to the working environment and an unprecedented perspective on architecture, fully in line with the New European Bauhaus.

The northern building, NHQ, was completed in 2007 based on the design by AP atelier of Josef Pleskot. The building is designed with a strong focus on sustainability, featuring green roofs and terraces, and it was the first office building in Central Europe to receive LEED Gold certification. The southern building, SHQ, designed by Chalupa Architekti, was completed in 2019. The concept of low pavilions embedded into the slope respects the surrounding landscape. Heating and cooling are provided by a system of heat pumps drawing energy from 177 boreholes – the largest system of its kind in the Czech Republic. The building has achieved the highest level of LEED Platinum certification.

Tour C: Carbonization and decarbonization in the regions

The programme includes bus transportation, guided tour in English, and refreshments. At the end of the tour, participants will also have the option to be dropped off directly at Václav Havel Airport in Prague.

Unravel the jewels of Czech architecture in the mining region!

The tour will start with “the carbonization” at the edge of the Nástup mine near Tušimice as an example of a completely different use of the landscape. The still active open-pit mine supplies brown coal to the adjacent Tušimice II and Prunéřov II power plants. Annual mining is around 13.5 million tons of coal.

From there, we will continue in much decarbonized way. To Karlovy Vary, visit the Hotel Thermal, a remarkable example of brutalist architecture. Its unique outdoor swimming pool is built on a rock next to the main building and is partially supplied with spring water. The entire hotel underwent a complete revitalization in 2022. During our visit, we will walk through the congress facilities, the Great Hall, the Sun Bridge, a hotel room, and even the technological areas, including the pool systems.

Finally, we will explore the Imperial Spa building, a jewel of the French Neo-Renaissance style. During its overall revitalization in 2023, a multifunctional hall by architect Petr Hájek was added in the roofed atrium, designed as a separate steel structure resting on six legs so it does not touch the historical walls. The reconstruction and new functional use of the building serve as a model example of restoring a national heritage monument, earning prestigious awards such as the Czech Building of the Year 2024.
